Croque Monsieur
The ultimate French toasted sandwich loaded with ham, melted Gruyère cheese, and topped with a rich béchamel sauce.
Ingredients
- 4 slices thick brioche or sourdough bread
- 4 slices high-quality cooked ham
- 1.5 cups grated Gruyère cheese
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp flour
- 3/4 cup milk
- Pinch of nutmeg, Dijon mustard

Make the béchamel: Melt 1 tbsp butter in a saucepan, whisk in the flour, and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and thick. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.

Lightly toast the bread slices. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on two slices.

Layer the ham and a handful of Gruyère cheese on the mustard-coated bread, then top with the second slice of bread.

Spread a generous layer of béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle with the remaining Gruyère cheese.

Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 10 minutes, then broil for 2-3 minutes until the cheese on top is bubbling and golden.
